Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda’s boys’ team has been crowned champions of the fourth edition of the CECAFA Qualifiers of the CAF African Schools Football Championship, after edging Ethiopia 3-1 on penalties in a tense final played Tuesday at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The closely contested match ended goalless in normal time, sending the championship decider straight into spot-kicks where Uganda held their nerve to lift the regional crown.
In the girls’ category, Tanzania emerged victorious after defeating Ethiopia 5-4 on penalties to claim the title.
Uganda’s girls’ team, meanwhile, settled for third place after a comfortable 2-0 win over Burundi in the playoff earlier in the day.
Uganda also put up a strong showing in the individual accolades. The country claimed the girls’ Fair Play Award, while Nabiru Kajumba finished as top scorer in the boys’ competition.
Tanzania’s Hajra Mawanja took the Golden Boot in the girls’ category.
Uganda dominated the Most Valuable Player awards as well, with Muhoozi Henry named best player in the boys’ category, and Lydia Namaseruka taking home the girls’ MVP honour.
As part of the tournament prizes, Uganda received US$ 100,000 (Shs354M) for winning the boys’ championship.
The girls’ team earned US$ 50,000 (Shs176M) for their third-place finish.
