Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda Cranes have been placed in Group C of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, alongside last tournament’s finalists, Nigeria.
The final draw for AFCON 2025 took place during a star-studded ceremony at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat on Monday, revealing the paths for the 24 qualified teams vying for the trophy.
The teams have been organised into six groups, each consisting of four teams, in preparation for the finals tournament scheduled to be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
In Group C, Uganda, who were runners-up in 1978, will compete against the Super Eagles, neighbours and co-hosts for AFCON 2027, Tanzania, as well as Tunisia.
Meanwhile, defending champions, Côte d’Ivoire will face their long-time rivals and five-time winners Cameroon, along with Gabon and Mozambique in Group F, as they aim to secure back-to-back titles.
Regarding the draws, Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put acknowledged that while there are no easy opponents in Africa, the team is prepared to put up a strong fight.
“There are no easy teams in Africa. We have to believe in ourselves, take this opportunity. So we have to prepare ourselves,” Put said.
Uganda secured its qualification for AFCON in November, finishing with 13 points in Group K, just behind South Africa, who topped the group with 14 points.
This will mark Uganda’s eighth appearance at the continent’s most prestigious tournament.
The last time Uganda participated in AFCON was in 2019, where they reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Senegal, thanks to the only goal of the match from Sadio Mane in the 15th minute.
Uganda’s best performance in AFCON history came in 1978 when they finished as runners-up after losing 2-0 to Ghana, in Accra.
