Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth Oboth, has commended China for its steadfast support in promoting global peace and strengthening military cooperation with Uganda.
Speaking at the Chinese Embassy in Kampala during the commemoration of the 98th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Minister Oboth Oboth hailed the PLA as a “trustworthy friend” that has supported the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) through training opportunities and regional security collaboration.
“Our relationship with China has enabled Uganda to benefit from numerous military trainings in China, and the PLA has consistently supported UPDF efforts to maintain regional peace and security,” the minister said.
Oboth Oboth also lauded China’s contribution to Uganda’s goal of building a self-reliant defense industry.
Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the strong and longstanding military relations between the two nations, grounded in shared values of national sovereignty and mutual support.
“Uganda and China are now bound in a comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership,” Ambassador Zhang said.
“The PLA and the UPDF have always stood together in support of national independence and security.”
He also highlighted broader cooperation between the two countries in sectors such as infrastructure, health, agriculture, trade, and digital innovation.
Ambassador Zhang noted that China has granted 100% tariff exemption on imports from 33 least developed African countries, including Uganda, in a move following the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing summit held in September last year.
The PLA anniversary event underscored growing military and diplomatic ties between Kampala and Beijing, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to shared development and regional stability.
