Africa-Press – Uganda. Hundreds of mourners gathered at Lubaga Cathedral on Friday morning for a solemn requiem mass in honor of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday.
The service began with a dignified procession of clergy in white cassocks, setting a tone of reverence and mourning.
The mass drew a diverse cross-section of Ugandans, reflecting the late pontiff’s broad moral influence and message of unity.
Vice President Jessica Alupo led the government delegation, while opposition leaders including National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi were also in attendance.
Their presence, alongside religious leaders and ordinary citizens, marked a rare moment of national solidarity.
Speakers at the mass paid tribute to Pope Francis’ enduring commitment to peace, humility, and care for the vulnerable.

During that historic tour, he honored the Uganda Martyrs, celebrated Mass at Namugongo, and spoke powerfully about faith, youth empowerment, and social justice.
His warmth, simplicity, and deep respect for African spirituality resonated with many Ugandans, who saw in him a true shepherd of the people and a symbol of moral clarity in complex times.
