Africa-Press – Uganda. Ugandans living in Canada celebrated Uganda’s 63rd Independence anniversary with pomp and pride at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, rallying around a renewed call for unity and collective progress within the diaspora.

The event, attended by hundreds of Ugandans from across Canadian provinces, was graced by the Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, Mohammed Bagonza, who delivered the keynote address and officially launched the National Alliance of Ugandan Canadian Associations (NAUCA).

Bagonza, who was accompanied by his deputy, Henry Wabyona, and Uganda’s Acting High Commissioner to Canada, Ambassador Allan Kajik, described the new alliance as a “historic milestone” in strengthening coordination among Ugandans living abroad.

“The Diaspora remains an integral part of Uganda’s transformation journey. Through unity and collective effort, Ugandans abroad can play a powerful role in driving national development,” Bagonza said.

He commended the Ugandan community in Canada for their patriotism, innovation, and continued contributions to Uganda’s economy through remittances, investment, and knowledge exchange.

The launch of NAUCA, an umbrella body for Ugandan associations in Canada, is expected to enhance cultural exchange, promote entrepreneurship, and provide a unified platform to advocate for diaspora concerns.

NAUCA Chairperson Justus Mirembe said the formation of the alliance was long overdue. “For over two decades, we have discussed issues like visa waivers for Ugandans with foreign passports, high dual citizenship fees, diaspora voting rights, and the need for a formal diaspora policy. The formation of NAUCA is a step toward having one strong voice that represents Ugandans in Canada,” he said.

Ambassador Kajik praised the strong bilateral ties between Uganda and Canada, noting that both countries share values of peace, inclusivity, and cooperation.

He further lauded the Ugandan community for their contributions toward national development through remittances, investments, and advocacy.

The Independence celebration featured cultural performances, a business exhibition, and a dinner gala that showcased Uganda’s diversity and resilience.
