Africa-Press – Uganda. Absa Bank Uganda has officially flagged off five Ugandan runners to represent the country at the prestigious Absa Run Your City Series scheduled for September,24, 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Ugandan representatives are those that won the 2024 and 2025 Absa KH3-7 Hills Run.

Speaking during the flagging off ceremony at Absa headquarters in Kampala, Brian Ategeka described it as a rare opportunity to enable him get exposure.

“I have got an opportunity to travel abroad and participate at such a global stage. I am prepared to use it as a stepping stone to enable me compete seriously in marathons,” Ategeka said.

“My ambition is to become among the country’s most prized assets and I hope this is the beginning of everything. I know I can compete at a world level.”

According to Ategeka, he will be participating in the 10km race but said he would have loved to participate in the marathon but said since everything has a start, he will give it a try.

“Previously, in the 10km race, I have been clocking a time of between 33minutes and 35 minutes and I hope to improve this time to not go past 30minutes.”

Collins Cherotich, another runner, said he hopes to improve his time.

“Whereas other people will be chasing 30minutes and so forth, I hope I can do 33 or 32 minutes in the Absa 10km run in Johannesburg,” said Cherotich who said he runs for fan.

“I have been doing more of ultra marathon and the marathon. I am anxious to go and put my legs down the for the 10km run and see how I can perform.”

David Wandera, Absa Bank Uganda Managing Director reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to its pledge.

“During the 2024 and 2025 Absa KH3-7 Hills Runs, we promised that the winners would be sponsored to participate in the Absa Run Your City Series in Johannesburg. Today, I am glad that we are fulfilling that commitment,” he said.

Wandera noted that the Absa KH3-7 Hills Run has raised millions of shillings in support of girl child education across the country.

“We pride ourselves on being a force for good in the communities where we operate. As our runners set off to represent Uganda, we celebrate your dedication and spirit, carry our flag high and make Absa Bank Uganda proud,” he added.

Launched as one of South Africa’s leading road running events, the Absa Run Your City Series spans five major cities, integrating families, businesses, community investment, and world-class competition.

Over the years, it has grown into a highlight of the South African athletics calendar, giving participants a chance to compete alongside elite international runners.
