UPC Kicks off Sigs, Presidential Nomination Process Ahead of 2026 Elections

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has officially commenced the nomination process for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and party presidential aspirants as part of its roadmap to the 2026 general elections.

According to the party spokesperson Sharon Arach Oyat, the picking and returning of interest forms for SIG aspirants including youth, persons with disabilities, and older persons began on May 5 and will end on May 10, 2025. These forms are available through UPC district chairpersons and regional vice chairpersons.

In constituencies where multiple aspirants express interest, party primaries will be held between May 15 and 17, 2025. This aligns with the national electoral roadmap issued by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), which sets SIGs village committee nominations for June 2–10 and voting from June 16–19.

UPC has called on its leaders and members to mobilize aggressively to secure SIG positions at the grassroots level.

However, the party expressed concern over delays in the distribution of the SIG voters’ register, saying many villages had not received it, disrupting internal preparations.

“The register for the Special Interest Groups has not yet reached most villages. This is causing despair and complicating internal arrangements,” the statement noted, urging the IEC to resolve the issue urgently.

Additionally, UPC reminded all members interested in contesting for the party presidency that the declaration of interest period runs from May 5 to May 20, 2025.

The party emphasised its commitment to internal democracy as it prepares for a stronger showing in the upcoming elections.
