UPDF announces changes in fisheries protection unit

Africa-PressUganda. The Uganda Peoples Defence Force has made transfers in the fisheries protection unit countrywide, following complaints from fishermen to the CDF over increasing brutality during operations.

Speaking to journalists at Kololo airstrip yesterday (Tuesday, December 22, 2020) Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda, the chief of staff of the land forces, said that changes were made by the CDF himself after getting information that the Fisheries protection unit officers were engaging themselves in impounding motor vehicles and boats from the fishermen.According to Kyanda, Lt. Col. Dick Kirya has been appointed as a new commandant fish protection unit replacing Lt. Col. Moses Nuwagaba, Capt. FS Mwonda replacing Capt. Favorite Rugumayo as Buyende district FPU commander, Capt. Andrew Nayebare has been replaced by Capt. Benon Namanya as FPU commandant in Nakasongola district and Capt. JM Sserwaniko sent to Greater Masaka. He appealed to the fishermen who lost their boats and motor vehicle owners whose items were impounded and destroyed to work hand in hand with district officials and RDCs so that they get back their items and be paid back for those whose boats were destroyed. He said that they will not keep impounded motor vehicles in military barracks unless it’s a police barracks but the operation on the lakes to stop the bad fishing methods is continuing with the help of the police.
