Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), alongside the Uganda Police Force and Uganda Prison Service, have carried out extensive community service activities across Luweero, Nakasongola, Arua, and Kyotera districts ahead of the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary, demonstrating their commitment to national unity, peace, and socio-economic development.
The initiatives included sanitation exercises, such as cleaning markets, roads, and public spaces, as well as free medical camps offering treatment to local residents.
In Luweero District, the activities took place in Luweero Town, Kasana, and Wobulenzi, before extending to Katuugo, Kakooge, and Migyeera in neighbouring Nakasongola District—areas forming the historic Luweero Triangle, which played a key role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.
Maj Gen Charles Byanyima, commander of the Motorised Infantry Division, highlighted the significance of the Luweero Triangle, noting its role in supporting the liberation effort.
“The support for this peace originated significantly from the Luweero Triangle, which contributed greatly by feeding soldiers, offering personal support, and allowing their children to join the struggle to liberate Uganda,” he said.
He added that the annual return of security agencies to conduct community service in the area is both symbolic and necessary for national reflection.
“If you can’t understand where you came from, you can’t know where you are heading to,” he said.
Resident District Commissioner of Luweero, Bakunda Abel Mushambo, acknowledged the immense sacrifices made by local communities during the liberation struggle, commending their resilience and continued support for peace and development.
In Arua City, UPDF personnel partnered with other security agencies to conduct cleaning exercises around Arua Regional Referral Hospital and Arua Main Market.
Resident City Commissioner Maj (Rtd) Betty Otekat Akello said the activities reinforced collective responsibility and cooperation between citizens and security agencies.
Lt Col George Okello, Commanding Officer of the 55 Battalion, noted that the Tarehe Sita anniversary honours the gallant freedom fighters whose sacrifices laid the foundation for Uganda’s current peace and stability.
In Kyotera District, officers from the Armoured Division conducted town-cleaning exercises with the participation of local leaders, including Resident District Commissioner Matia Kagugube.
Maj Fred Malegano, speaking on behalf of the Armoured Division Commander, thanked residents for their cooperation and extended festive season greetings.
Tarehe Sita commemorates the launch of the armed struggle on February 6, 1981, and honours the sacrifices of freedom fighters that culminated in Uganda’s liberation in 1986.
Next year’s 45th anniversary will be held under the theme, “Defending the Gains of the Revolution and Honouring the Sacrifices of the Freedom Fighters: A Call for National Unity, Peace, and Socio-Economic Transformation.”
