The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) plays a crucial role in fostering private sector growth and improving Uganda’s investment climate, according to the Registrar General, Ms Mercy K. Kainobwisho.
Speaking at the Business and Innovation Forum for commercial attachés in Uganda, held at the URSB headquarters in Kololo, Ms Kainobwisho outlined the agency’s wide-ranging responsibilities, which extend beyond business registration to include intellectual property protection and legal documentation.
The forum, attended by foreign diplomats, ministers, URSB board members, and government representatives, was designed to showcase Uganda’s business reforms and innovations while engaging the diplomatic community in promoting the country as an investment destination.
Ms. Kainobwisho explained that URSB, established in 1910, serves as the custodian of key business and legal records that span more than a century.
While civil registration responsibilities were transferred to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), URSB continues to manage extensive documentation, including private company registrations, name changes, and other legal filings.
“We hold valuable information on movable property, company insolvency, liquidation proceedings, and bankruptcy cases,” she noted.
She further highlighted URSB’s critical role in intellectual property protection, maintaining records of trademarks, patents, designs, and utility models dating back to the 1960s. “Our systems help verify critical business and legal information that impacts daily transactions,” she stated, underscoring the agency’s public service function.
To ensure accessibility, URSB operates regional offices across Uganda, providing in-person services to both citizens and foreign investors.
Ms Kainobwisho reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enhancing Uganda’s business registration and intellectual property infrastructure, positioning it as a key pillar in the country’s economic development.
