Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC) today celebrated 40 years of dedicated service to supporting children with disabilities.
The event also marked the launch of their 2024–2029 Strategic Plan, with Hon. Safia Nalule Juuko, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, serving as the Guest of Honor.
Hon. Juuko commended the government, the United Nations, and USDC for their unwavering support of children with disabilities. She urged parents to take an active role in the care and well-being of their children with disabilities, stressing the importance of love, inclusion, and equal opportunities.
She pledged the commission’s continued collaboration with USDC and similar organisations to ensure children with disabilities live fulfilling lives.
USDC’s Executive Director, Dolorence Were, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government, partners, and alumni whose contributions have benefited over 30% of children with disabilities across Uganda. She emphasised the organisation’s commitment to addressing challenges and fostering inclusion.
Former Executive Director, Mr. Atria Jackson, highlighted a persistent stigma where some parents hide their children with disabilities.
He called on families to seek support and embrace opportunities for these children’s growth and development.
Engineer Patrick Batumbya addressed misconceptions about disability, affirming that “disability is not a curse” and advocating for greater inclusion and support in communities.
Similarly, Captain Abhay Argawal underscored the challenges of bullying and stigma faced by children with disabilities. He urged sensitisation efforts and greater parental involvement to combat such issues.
Mr. Ogwang George Morris, representing Lira District, shared success stories, including securing grants for parent support groups and the establishment of a rehabilitation center.
However, he also noted ongoing challenges, such as the psychological strain faced by parents caring for children with disabilities, highlighting the need for continuous support mechanisms.
As USDC celebrates this milestone, their new strategic plan aims to build on their achievements, fostering a more inclusive society for children with disabilities while addressing stigma and providing critical resources to families.
