MUKONO – Mukono district in conjunction with Nama Wellness Community Centre (NAWEC) has equipped 50 village health teams (VHTs) with medical kits for diagnosing and treating children with malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea within their localities. Mukono district health officer Dr Stephen Mulindwa said they include high-quality rapid diagnostic test kits which they will use to test for malaria in children. “We have also given them coartem doses for treating those found to have malaria; they have oral rehydration salts, zinc for managing children with diarrhoea and other medications,” he said. The medical director NAWEC, Pauline Pacho, said VHTs have undergone one month’s training in the diagnosing and treating diseases in children.
