Africa-Press – Uganda. Vivo Energy Uganda, the distributor of Shell-branded fuels and lubricants, is showcasing its recently launched Shell Gas clean cooking solutions for schools at the Association of Secondary School Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU) annual conference.
At the conference that started on Monday and will run up to Thursday at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the company has also supported the organisation with shs 20 million towards event organisation and logistics.
Speaking at the event, Alvin Bamutire, the LPG Manager at Vivo Energy Uganda, emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting the education sector while driving awareness of the benefits of adopting clean, safe, and reliable cooking energy.
“This conference offers us a valuable opportunity to engage with school leaders, demonstrate our schools’ Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) project, and highlight the long-term benefits of Shell Gas for institutional cooking. We are proud to support ASSHU and look forward to exploring future partnerships that will improve cooking solutions in schools.”
As part of its participation, Shell Gas will exhibit at the conference and offer attendees a firsthand look at its LPG solutions tailored for schools.
The exhibition allows Shell Gas to share its value proposition, including cost efficiency, safety, environmental benefits, and reliability compared to traditional cooking fuels.
Bibian Geraldine Nakabiri, Brand Manager, LPG, Vivo Energy Uganda, added, “We believe Shell Gas can play a transformative role in schools by offering modern energy solutions that not only improve the cooking experience but also contribute to sustainability. This conference allows us to start important conversations with school leaders about the opportunities for clean energy in educational institutions.”
The conversion to safe cooking gas offers several advantages for educational institutions. Schools that adopt LPG set a positive example for students by encouraging environmental responsibility and health-conscious behaviour.
According to officials from Vivo Energy, switching to LPG helps schools save on the cost of purchasing traditional fuels such as firewood and charcoal, which are often expensive and unreliable.
These savings can be redirected to essential needs such as infrastructure development and educational resources. Prolonged exposure to harmful smoke from traditional cooking fuels has been linked to respiratory diseases and other health issues.
By switching to LPG, schools reduce health risks for staff and students. Cooking with traditional fuels often takes longer due to the need to gather firewood and prepare stoves. LPG reduces cooking time, allowing more focus on academics and extracurricular activities.
LPG is also a cleaner, more sustainable energy source, reducing deforestation and minimising schools’ carbon footprint.
King’s College Budo, one of Uganda’s oldest and most prominent schools, recently took the lead in this transition to safe cooking gas.
The school’s decision to adopt LPG for cooking is a landmark event in Uganda’s educational sector, demonstrating a commitment to both environmental sustainability and the health and safety of the school community.
Deborah W. Basekanakyo, President of ASSHU and Headteacher of Wanyange Girls Secondary School, and Zulaika Nabukeera, the General Secretary of ASSHU and Headteacher of Nabisunsa Girls School, welcomed Vivo Energy Uganda’s sponsorship and participation.
“We are delighted to have Vivo Energy Uganda and Shell Gas on board as a sponsor of this year’s conference. Their participation enriches the conversations we are having about innovative solutions that can positively impact schools. We look forward to building stronger collaborations going forward.”
Through its presence at the conference, Vivo Energy Uganda aims to strengthen relationships with stakeholders in the education sector and lay the foundation for potential partnerships with schools across Uganda.
The company encouraged all headteachers to book an on-site LPG assessment to discover firsthand how Shell Gas can transform schools’ cooking needs and provide safer, cleaner energy for students and staff.
The shift to LPG represents a significant step forward for the schools, and it will undoubtedly save costs, reduce health risks, and enable more efficient use of time, benefiting both students and staff.
