Africa-Press – Uganda. Wakiso Giants want to finish the StarTimes Uganda Premier League for fairness’ sake, says Musa Ssebulime, commonly known as Atagenda, the team director.
Following a 42-day lockdown announced last week, it’s unclear when the league will resume. Express are top of the table and should Fufa invoke the 75% rule, they would be crowned champions.
But, Wakiso hasn’t lost hope. “It is only fair to end the season sportingly,” Atagenda (pic inset) says. “It gives satisfaction instead of choosing the winners.”
Wakiso sit ninth on 36 points with no title hopes or relegation fears. They are also out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup as BUL, Vipers, Police and Express are in the semi-finals of the annual tournament.
“Last year, it was an appropriate action because we had never been in a Covid-19 situation. Now we know more about the disease,” Atagenda adds. Fufa has been steadfast in vaccinating players.
However, enforcing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) remains a challenge. Atagenda suggests playing the remaining games in a gala format at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende and Njeru Technical Centre.
“If it means clubs paying for the costs, we can manage that situation,” he says.tlanta 1996 Games.
For the Cup, he says, the same can be done in three games without second leg action in the semis. Atagenda stresses that apart from the financial obligations to non-performing players when the league is called off, relegation has catastrophic consequences.
Last season, Maroons, Tooro United and Proline were relegated but Atagenda says they could have had a fighting chance. This season, Kyetume, Myda and Kitara are in the relegation zone and face a possibility of Big League football next [email protected]
