Africa-Press – Uganda. The leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine has stated that he holds no personal grudges against his former deputy for Buganda, Mathias Mpuuga.
Kyagulanyi explained that he and his party only chose to move on from Mpuuga due to his past incident involving the acceptance of a Shs 500 million service reward.
He made the remarks after attending the Kabaka’s birthday thanksgiving mass at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala on April 13, 2025.
At the event, Bobi and Mpuuga, who have been embroiled in a war of words in recent months, were seen shaking hands and conversing after a prolonged period of tension.
When asked by journalists about this gesture, Kyagulanyi emphasised that despite their previous disagreements, he and his party harbour no personal resentment.
“We have no enmity with our brother (Mpuuga). There is no dispute between us. The only issue is that he made a mistake, which everyone witnessed, and he did not admit it. That is why we relieved him of his responsibilities. We have closed that chapter and moved forward,” Kyagulanyi stated.
Mpuuga’s relationship with NUP deteriorated last year after the party accused him of corruption for accepting a controversial Shs 500 million as a “service award.”
This controversy arose from a meeting of the Parliamentary Commission on May 6, 2022, where Mpuuga and three other parliamentary commissioners reportedly divided a total of Shs 1.7 billion among themselves as a service award, despite having served for less than a year.
Mpuuga allegedly received Shs 500 million, barely a year into his tenure.
The other three backbench commissioners, Solomon Silwany (MP Bukooli county central), Prossy Mbabazi (DW MP Rubanda) and Esther Afoyochan (Zombo DW MP) received Shs400m each as service reward, triggering public uproar.
Sunday’s thanksgiving was attended by thousands of people who turned up to thank God for the Kabaka’s 70 years.
“We thank God for the glorious 70 years of His Majesty and pray for many more years of good health and wisdom as he leads his people. Agunde gunde Omuterega, Magulunyondo!” Kyagulanyi stated.
