The police in Kampala Metropolitan (KMP) area have described this year’s Christmas day 2020 as ‘very peaceful’ with no major crime so far registered.
The peaceful Christmas has been attributed to the ongoing ban on concerts and music shows throughout the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March this year, President Yoweri Museveni imposed a lockdown where most institutions, bars and music concerts and shows were suspended to curb the spread of the coronavirus.Last week, the police issued out warnings to people who had started announcing music shows and any other gatherings during the Christmas and New Year season to stop forthwith or face arrest and prosecution.”We didn’t register any major incidents. Normally problems are in the evenings when people go out to party but this time there was no partying,” said Patrick Onyango, the KMP spokesperson.According to Onyango, the ongoing curfew that starts at 9:00pm and ends at 6:00am also helped a lot to prevent crime.”By 9:00pm people were already in their homes,” Onyango said, adding that there was calmness everywhere.
