Africa-Press – Uganda. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has revealed that the kingdom purposefully organised for National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, and his former deputy for Buganda, Mathias Mpuuga, to sit together during the Thanksgiving prayers for Kabaka Mutebi.
At the Kabaka’s 70th birthday thanksgiving mass held at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala, Bobi and Mpuuga, who had been at odds for several months, were spotted sitting together and engaging in conversation.
In an exclusive interview with Sanyuka Television, Mayiga has explained that the seating arrangement was planned at Bulange Mengo.
“During the Kabaka’s birthday prayers, we intentionally arranged for Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and Mathias Mpuuga to sit together. They chatted during the service,” Mayiga said.
“I later asked them, ‘Why can’t you always communicate like you did in church?’”
Months to the event, Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi had been involved in a heated exchange over political disagreements.
Their fallout occurred when NUP dismissed Mpuuga from his position for accepting Shs500 million as a parliamentary commissioner.
The party labeled his acceptance of the funds as corrupt and demanded an apology, which Mpuuga refused, leading to his suspension.
Despite their previous conflicts, Mpuuga and Bobi were later seen together, at Kabaka’s thanksgiving mass, conversing, a moment that Mayiga described as a reflection of the harmony the kingdom aims to promote.
“I can see my son-in-law Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu sitting together with my uncle Mathias Mpuuga. My son-in-law, the sister is there who he gave me, and Mathias Mpuuga is my uncle. I saw them conversing. Such gestures of talking should continue,” Mayiga said, prompting applause from the congregation.
