Africa-Press – Uganda. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has money plays a crucial role in politics, stating that it is impossible to avoid the use of money in the political process.
Speaking during NBS Barometer on Tuesday, Nabbanja emphasized that financial resources are crucial for facilitating political events and ensuring that people can actively participate in the electoral process “It’s hard to avoid using money in politics,” she said.
“First of all, if people have traveled long distances to attend your gathering, why not give them transport? Are they supposed to come and starve? Even accessing a public address system requires payment.”
Nabbanja’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the growing influence of money in Ugandan politics, especially as the rising costs of campaigning have led some to argue that NRM politics have become increasingly expensive and driven by financial resources.
She pointed out that political gatherings and events often require funding for logistical support, including transport for attendees, accommodation, and renting equipment like public address systems, which are essential for reaching a larger audience.
Nabbanja further clarified that the need for financial backing isn’t just about personal gain, but rather a necessary component for ensuring that grassroots support is mobilized and that citizens can be part of political processes.
“Without resources, how can you organize a gathering? How can people even hear you if there is no sound system? How can you bring people together if they can’t afford transport?” Nabbanja questioned.
Nabbanja also stressed the need for transparency and accountability in how money is used in politics.
She emphasized that funds should not be misused for illegal or unethical practices but should be directed toward facilitating public engagement and ensuring that the political process remains open and accessible to all.
