Africa-Press – Uganda. A recent initiative aimed at empowering youth with hearing impairment in Uganda has made significant progress in promoting independence, education, and family support.
Led by SignHealth Uganda, the project has positively impacted young individuals with hearing impairments and their families through exposure visits, skills training, and awareness programs.
A total of 52 deaf youth participated in exposure visits and exchange learning opportunities, where they shared experiences on running savings schemes, managing individual business projects, and strategies for market penetration.
These activities equipped participants with practical skills to enhance their economic independence and self-reliance.
Recognising the vital role of families, the project conducted family awareness and communication training sessions. Over 210 parents, community leaders, and teachers were educated on effective care for children with hearing impairments, protection and advocacy strategies, and improving communication within families.
This initiative has helped bridge gaps in understanding and support for youth with hearing impairment at home and in their communities.

One of the project’s key programs includes early education support, offering pre-school classes for deaf children aged 3 to 6, taught by professional teachers to ensure a strong foundation for learning.
Despite its successes, the project identified persistent barriers such as limited access to government programs for individuals with hearing impairment, lack of comprehensive sex education in deaf schools, and scarce job opportunities for youth with hearing impairment.
To address these issues, stakeholders recommend increased government inclusion policies, enhanced sex education programs tailored for the most affected students, and more vocational training and employment opportunities.
The project’s achievements underscore the importance of community engagement, skills training, and family involvement in empowering youth with hearing impairment.
Moving forward, SignHealth Uganda and its partners aim to expand these initiatives, ensuring a more inclusive and equitable future for Uganda’s hearing-impaired community.
