Africa-Press – Zambia. President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has announced that December 29 will be declared a public holiday to formally recognise the commemoration of the Declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation.
President HICHILEMA says Secretary to the Cabinet, PATRICK KANGWA, will be directed to undertake the necessary legal procedures.
He was speaking in Lusaka today during the 34th Commemoration of the Declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation.
The President called on the Church to continue praying for the country as it prepares for the General Election next year.
He said elections should not be used as a platform for violence, hate speech or division.
President HICHILEMA urged citizens to exercise restraint before, during and after the elections, adding that he is not prepared to engage in physical confrontations with political opponents and expects the electorate and party cadres to act peacefully.
He said Christian values such as integrity, hard work, accountability, democracy, human dignity and patriotism must guide the nation.
The President added that the Church and Government are not adversaries but partners serving the same people.
President HICHILEMA thanked former President FREDRICK CHILUBA for declaring Zambia a Christian Nation and also acknowledged successive Presidents for maintaining the country’s Christian status.
He said President CHILUBA’s vision was for citizens to live in unity and practise true Christian values.
Meanwhile, Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO said President HICHILEMA continues to join citizens in commemorating the day because of his belief that Zambia is, and will remain, a Christian Nation.
Mrs. NALUMANGO said Zambia stands to experience greater progress through commitment and submission to God.
National Day of Prayer Chairperson, Venerable Canon ROBERT SIHUBWA, congratulated President HICHILEMA on his recognition by The Telegraph as one of the best-performing global leaders of 2025.
And Advocates of the Declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation Chairperson, Bishop BILLY MFULA, said nothing should be allowed to divide the country, adding that Zambia will serve as an example to other nations.
In a homily, Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia –EFZ- Board Chairperson Bishop JOE IMAKANDO commended Government for its achievements and encouraged it to do more.
