DMMU Moves to Restore Lundazi Connectivity

Africa-Press – Zambia. The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit –DMMU- has issued the Road Development Agency –RDA- with a seven-day ultimatum to repair all damaged bridges in Lundazi District.

DMMU National Coordinator NORMAN CHIPAKUPAKU says the repair works must be treated as a priority to restore connectivity between Lundazi and the rest of Eastern Province.

Mr. CHIPAKUPAKU said this during a press briefing in Lundazi, shortly before leading an assessment of flood damage in the district.

He said DMMU will provide food and shelter to residents whose homes were submerged following the floods.

Mr. CHIPAKUPAKU noted that flooding is no longer confined to a single district but is gradually affecting many parts of the country, adding that cooperation among stakeholders will be essential in responding to emergencies.

He further said DMMU is prepared to respond to emergencies in all 43 districts that are likely to experience either drought or floods.

Meanwhile, Zambia National Service Deputy Commander Major General RUEBEN MWEWA said the service stands ready for deployment once working conditions allow.

Major General MWEWA said three water bowsers have already been deployed to supply water to residents of LUNDAZI.

And LUNDAZI District Commissioner MAJORY BANDA said food supplies and water bowsers have been positioned to assist affected residents in the district.
