Africa-Press – Zambia. GOVERNMENT’S move to engage private firms like Grant Thornton to audit the security and defence wings is wrong because the Head of state is heavily linked to the firm, National Democratic Congress (NDC) President Saboi Imboela has said.
Ms Imboela said President Hakainde Hichilema was still a member at Grant Thornton and that he just went on leave in 2016. She said surprisingly the same firm was given the contract to audit security wings which did not augur well with most people.
She said the move was more like taking people for granted and that this needed to stop because there was no way a firm that he had vested interest in could conduct such audits.
Ms Imboela said Mr Hichilema was micro managing things hence people were scared to conduct certain things because they would be looking over their shoulders.
She said he needed to emulate his Kenyan counterpart President William Ruto who had made it clear that he would accept criticism as it would help him work harder.
Ms Imboela said that was not the case in Zambia since people with opposing views were intimidated and even thrown in jail. She said that this was evident in the video that was released showing some UPND cadres beating up a police officer.
“It’s unfortunate because the said cadres would not be tolerated but what we are seeing is something contrary as they are on the loose again,” Ms Imboela said.
