Africa-Press – Zambia. Following news that Chipolopolo captain and midfielder Enock Mwepu has retired from his career due to a hereditary heart condition, he has asked for privacy for him to digest the situation.
In a statement released today October 10, 2022 by Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) communications manager Sydney Mungala, FAZ President disclosed that he spoke to Mwepu and he requested for privacy during this time.
“I have since spoken to the player who advises that [he] be left alone in the meantime to digest in privacy what has just happened.”
“We however remain at his full disposal for him and his family in this dark moment. Should need for further information arise the player and agent will liaise with FAZ with the interests of the player being of utmost importance,” Kamanga said.
Meanwhile Kamanga was saddened about the development and asked for calm on the matter as the association waits to hear from the player and medics on the next step.
The Brighton & Holve Abion midfielder nicknamed the ‘Zambian Zidane’ by the club failed to participate in the back to back friendly encounter with Mali as he suffered a medical setback and was admitted in a Bamako hospital. Mwepu was later on flew to London on September 25 with hopes for better news.
But Brighton & Hove Albion Head of Medicine and Performance, Adam Brett revealed that Mwepu was diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition which can worsen with time and likely put the player at high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event.
FAZ disclosed that Mwepu was admitted in a London hospital since being airlifted from Bamako on September 25 for further medical tests. “While it is too soon to talk about the next step, we will walk with him throughout this journey and wish him full recovery. We urge everyone to keep Mwepu and his family in prayers as he recovers from this condition.”
Mwepu became the second-ever Zambian to score in the English Premier League after striker Patson Daka did so against Manchester United. The Computer was rewarded for his strike against the Reds in the fixture at Anfield on October 30, 2021.
