Africa-Press – Zambia. Deputy Minister of Labour Vera Kamtukule has said there is a mismatch between the skills being offered in universities and community technical colleges and what the industry requires. She made the remarks in Parliament on Tuesday.
Kamtukule was responding to a question by Rumphi West legislator Yona Adadawize Mkandawire, who wanted to know if the ministry had the policy to make sure that community colleges benefit the graduates and communities surrounding the colleges.
The deputy minister said the ministry and Teveta were reviewing the curriculum. “We are reviewing the curriculum to ensure that it responds accurately to the ever-growing needs of the labour market because, without that, our economy will be lacking skills,” Kamtukule said.
The ministry has since emphasised that it was the government’s wish for every constituency to have a skills development centre. Kamtukule said as such, all the technical college developments would be completed. She also said the major challenge was that there were no training centres for teachers, but the matter was being addressed.
