Africa-PressZambia. Some passengers aboard a Kenyan Airways flight were Tuesday detained on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport and were allowed entry into the country after being cleared of Covid.

This follows a travel restriction issued by the Ministry of Health last week, which allows only nationals with Malawian passports into the country. Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services deputy spokesperson Wellington Chiponde confirmed the development.

“I can confirm that I have received a report that foreign nationals that were returning aboard a Kenyan Airways flight were detained at Kamuzu International Airport in line with Covid guidelines,” Chiponde said. He said the passengers were later allowed into the country after being cleared of Covid.

On Saturday, Secretary for Health Charles Mwansambo wrote the Inspector-General of Police, Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Secretary for Homeland Security and district commissioners in all border districts informing them that they should not give entry permission to anyone that does not hold a resident permit for Malawi or is not domiciled or ordinarily resident in Malawi.

Presidential Taskforce on Covid co-Chairperson Dr Wilfred Chalamira Nkhoma last week accused the Department of Immigration of flouting the preventive measures.
