Africa-Press – Zambia. PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says Judges are accountable to the people of zambia who desire to see a positive turnaround in the judicial system. The President Lungu said thise when he swore in 10 High Court judges after their appointment and subsequent ratification by parliament.
The new judges include Judges Dorcas Munkombwe Malama, Charles Kafunda, Daniel Musonda, Joshua Banda, Marriam Matandala–Bah and Twaambo Shalwindi–Musonda. Others are Judges Willie Sinyangwe, John Harrison Mbuzi, Mwaka Chigali-Mikalile, and Lameck Mwale.
“Your being sworn in is well deserved and increases the number of High Court Judges from forty-one to fifty-one. I believe this will help the court share the workload the Judges have had. Your appointments are as a result of my government’s policy of encouraging career progression in the judicial service and the public service. It is important, therefore, that as you take up your new roles in the high court, you should use your individual previous experiences in the administration of justice to improve service delivery in the courts,” said President Lungu.
He said as newly appointed high court judges, they are taking up duties at a time when the public have been enlightened about their rights to efficient and effective administration of justice. President Lungu said the judges should, therefore, not let them down.
“My government has embarked on improving infrastructure in the judiciary so as to address the challenge of inadequate offices and courtrooms currently being faced by you, our learned judges, in the performance of your constitutional mandate. At this point let me commend you, the judiciary, for your effort in dispensing justice timely, despite some of these highlighted challenges. Let me end by encouraging you to continue dispensing justice in a timeous manner as justice delayed is justice denied,” he said.
“Let me also remind you that we are now in a campaign period, and it is during this period, and after elections that you become inundated with cases of political nature. I trust that you are up to the task and you shall preside over these cases fairly and expeditiously. Once again, i take this opportunity to congratulate each one of you on your well-deserved appointments. I wish you god’s guidance in the disharge of your duties.”
