Africa-Press – Zambia. OpenAI is pressing ahead with its ambitious Stargate initiative, confirming plans to build five massive new data centers in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank.

The project, which could cost tens of billions of dollars, is designed to secure the computing power required for the next generation of frontier artificial intelligence systems.

The new data centers will increase Stargate’s projected capacity to 7 gigawatts, which is sufficient energy to power over 5 million households, according to a statement released by OpenAI on Wednesday.

Oracle is working on the development of three of the new websites. They can be found in Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Shackelford County, Texas; and an unidentified place in the Midwest. SoftBank is working on the development of the other two locations, one in Milam County, Texas, and the other in Lordstown, Ohio.

The Stargate project represents one of the most ambitious AI infrastructure undertakings ever announced. Each facility will be designed to host millions of graphics processing units (GPUs) and other specialized AI accelerators, enabling OpenAI to scale the training of increasingly large and complex AI models.

OpenAI has already partnered with Microsoft Azure for cloud services, but the inclusion of Oracle and SoftBank marks a significant strategic expansion. Oracle is expected to contribute its enterprise cloud infrastructure expertise and global data center presence, while SoftBank is set to play a crucial role in financing the project and potentially integrating it with its telecoms and technology ecosystem, particularly in Asia.
