STAKEHOLDERS REACT TO INCREASE IN FUEL PUMP PRICES

Africa-Press – Zambia. Stakeholders have expressed disappointment on the decision by authorities to increase the fuel pump price, with some saying it will affect consumers who are already overburden with various economic challenges.

Yesterday, the Energy Regulation Board-ERB announced the price increase for petroleum products with Petrol now costing K27.22 per liter from K24.49 while low surplus diesel has risen to K29.25 per liter from K26. 44 with Kerosene increasing to K22. 29 per liter from K19.98.

Some drivers spoken to by Millennium radio have complained that the increase in the price of fuel will negatively affect their business especially if bus fares are not hiked in the shortest possible time.

The drivers say they fear that they will be forced out of business considering all the other expenses that they have to take care of on top on the increased fuel prices.

Meanwhile the bus and taxi drivers’ association of Zambia secretary general Sydney Mbewe has government should consider coming up with incentives that will assist the drivers.

Mr. Mbewe says the association is disappointed that despite fuel being a critical component the government has not found strategic measures to make a win win situation for commuters and the drivers.

And the Zambia consumer association president juba Sakala says it is unfortunate that at the time when the cost of living is going up, fuel prices have also been increased.
