Africa-Press – Zambia. THE issue of the Barotseland issue if not properly dealt with would end up a serious security concern, former defence minister George Mpombo has said.

Dr Mpombo said government should deal with the issue head on because the matter has continued to resurface for some time. He said this was a delicate matter which should not be swept under the carpet as doing so was recipe for disaster.

“This is a delicate matter which needs to be handled with care and government should not be shy to engage the people calling for succession and tackle all the thorny issues,” Dr Mpombo said.

A group from Western Province has written to President Hakainde Hichilema demanding separation of Western Province from the rest of the country as an independent, sovereign state.

The secessionists have revived their decades long petition of getting separated from the country and declare the region an independent and sovereign state to be called Barotseland. Past regimes have however rejected this demand which has resurfaced and been addressed to President Hichilema.
