The Call To Ban Alcohol; Our Opinion- Dr. Aaron Mujajati

Africa-Press – Zambia. We agree that Zambia has a serious alcohol abuse problem among young people. Take a walk to UTH or Chainama and you will see what alcohol abuse is doing to our young people. It is disheartening. You will find Young people being treated for mental illnesses, heart diseases, liver diseases, trauma to mention a few. And here we are only talking about those that didnt die from road crushes, violence and alcohol poisoning.

We call on all concerned to seriously look into how we can mitigate alcohol abuse in our communities. We all can not continue to bury our heads in the sand because we are not affected directly. Should alcohol be banned?

Well, you have to respect Dr. Brian Chota Sampa – BCS for his method of bringing the issue to light and for drawing everyone’s attention to the problem. On that score we appreciate the publicity and he should continue. However, the call to ban alcohol may throw away the baby with the bath water as it were. Therefore, we believe greater effort needs to go towards preventing abuse and you do that by empowering people with information targeted at behaviour change. Stop abusing alcohol. You have heard.
