Africa-Press – Zambia. Newly crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Bantamweight champion Kudakwashe Chiwendire says it is time for former WBC Bantamweight Champion Catherine Phiri to hang up her boxing gloves.

Chiwendire defeated Phiri on Saturday night via a split points decision from the three judges who scored 92-98, 96-94 and 92-98 in favour of the Zimbabwean pugilist after 10 rounds.

Chiwendire, 26 controlled most of rounds with her quick moves and powerful left upper cuts which left Phiri with a disfigured face. Phiri looked the opposite of her old imposing self, failing to keep guard while allowing Chiwendire some clean punches to her face.

Speaking after she claimed the vacant belt, Chiwendire told journalists that it was time for Phiri to retire from boxing. “She is old it is time for her to retire, am 26 she can’t compete against me. She finished the rounds but I wasn’t thinking we will go the full length because I wanted to knock her down”.

“The decision by the judges was what they chose to say just to comfort her”.

Meanwhile Phiri who has congratulated her opponent is saddened that despite her adequate preparations, she could not claim the WBC Super Bantamweight title. The boxing bonanza had eight bouts and in the main supporting fight Alfred Muwowo beat Malawi’s Robert Kachiza via a technical knockou
