Zambia Attorney General Seeks Access to Lungu's Body

Africa-Press – Zambia. Zambia’s Attorney General has demanded access to the late Edgar Lungu’s body for identification and authentication purposes.

Mulilo Kabesha, through the lawyers representing the state in South Africa, has warned that failure to grant access will prompt them to seek an order from the Pretoria High Court.

In a letter dated 29 July, the lawyers representing the Zambian government formally wrote to their counterparts, Mashele Attorneys, and to Two Mountains Burial Services, the mortuary holding the late Lungu’s body.

The letter requests consent, along with that of the Lungu family, to arrange a visit to the funeral parlour for identification and authentication.

They indicated that state representatives conducting this process will be available from 29 July until Friday.

The respondents have been asked to confirm their availability and specify any requirements or conditions for accessing the body.

It was also emphasised that the process will not cause any harm or prejudice to the family, as it is a necessary and respectful step to bring certainty to a matter of both public and personal interest.

However, the state warned that refusal or failure to provide consent will lead them to question the bona fides of the family’s position and compel them to approach the High Court for appropriate relief.

The attorneys remain hopeful that court intervention will be unnecessary if the request to identify and authenticate the body is granted collectively.
