Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Local Government and Public Works ministry has announced a landmark housing scheme for Zimbabwean war veterans, with 50 000 fully serviced residential stands set to be availed under a partnership with property developer Prevail Group.

Local Government minister Daniel Garwe said the initiative aligned with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision of inclusive development.

“Our liberation heroes deserve dignity and security,” he said.

“This project reaffirms the government’s commitment to ensuring no one is left behind.

“We are mobilising all stakeholders to guarantee its success.”

Veterans of the Liberation Struggle minister Monica Mavhunga echoed Garwe’s sentiments, emphasising the broader empowerment agenda for ex-combatants.

“This is not just about land,” she said.

“We are building sustainable communities where veterans and their families can thrive.”

Prevail Group chairperson Paul Tungwarara confirmed readiness to begin work.

“We are poised to deliver with speed and efficiency. Our expertise in large-scale projects across southern Africa and the UAE [United Arab Emirates] ensures quality infrastructure — roads, water and electricity — will be prioritised,” he said.

Prevail Group, which has expanded rapidly in the region and Middle East, will leverage on its technical and financial capacity to fast-track the nationwide project.

The scheme forms part of government efforts to address housing shortages and honour liberation war contributors, with Garwe adding that it would also boost Zimbabwe’s broader housing delivery targets.

The initiative ranks among the largest State-led empowerment programmes for veterans, aiming to transform housing access into lasting economic security for those who fought for independence.

However, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) urged transparency in the allocation process.

“While we welcome this initiative, past grievances over unfair distribution must not be repeated. A clear, accountable system is critical to ensure deserving veterans benefit,” a ZNLWVA representative said.

Tungwarara recently unveiled the Presidential War Veterans Fund with a US$1,5 million budget.

He also unveiled the war veterans’ rural housing scheme to buy the support of ex-combatants.
