Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) is mourning the loss of one of its senior academics, Associate Professor Bubuya Masola, who was found dead at his flat on Sunday. He was 69.
NUST Director of Communication and Marketing, Thabani Mpofu, confirmed the passing of the esteemed pharmacologist and biochemist in a statement. Said Mpofu:
It is with a heavy heart that the University announces the passing of Prof Bubuya Masola, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine. Prof Masola passed away yesterday at his flat. He was 69.
Professor Masola began his academic journey with NUST on 5 February 2018, joining the Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry. Prior to that, he held prominent academic and professional roles in both Zimbabwe and South Africa.
He served as a Clinical Biochemist at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals from January 1985 to March 1986 before joining the University of Zimbabwe as a lecturer, a position he held from April 1986 to December 2005.
In 2006, he moved to the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, where he was a senior lecturer until 2015 and later served as an Honorary Senior Research Associate until early 2018.
Professor Masola officially retired from NUST in December 2020, but continued to contribute to the university through annual post-retirement contracts up until his passing.
He will be laid to rest on Tuesday at Lady Stanley Cemetery. A funeral service is scheduled for 8AM at the Amphitheatre.
