Zim receives over US$26 million grant for climate change

THE Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry has received a US$26,574,567 grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for strengthening and building the climate resilience of agricultural livelihoods of vulnerable communities.
The Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mangaliso Ndlovu announced the developments in a statement this Thursday.

He said the project is set to run for a period of 7years; that is 2020-2027.

‘The project will focus on on the following provinces; Matebeleland South, Masvingo, Manicaland. It is also set to benefit a total of 2, 302,120 people, directly benefiting 543,620 people and indirectly benefit 1,758,500 people.

Minister Ndlovu said the objective of the project is to strengthen the resilience of agricultural livelihoods of vulnerable communities, particularly women, in southern Zimbabwe.

He said in the face of increasing climate risks and impacts. The project will contribute to increased resilience and enhanced livelihoods of the most vulnerable people, communities and regions and increased resilience of health and well being, and food and water security for vulnerable smallholder communities in southern Zimbabwe.
“The project outcome will strengthen the adaptive capacities of vulnerable smallholder farmers, especially women, to climate change-induced impacts on their agro-ecosystems and livelihoods through the revitalisation of irrigation schemes, upgraded water and soil moisture management and water use efficiency, climate-resilient agriculture improved access to climate information and, markets and partnerships with public and private sector actors.”

“To achieve these outcomes the project proposes to overcome the identified barriers through the implementation of the following three interlinked Outputs, using GCF and co-financing resources: Increased access to water for climate-resilient agriculture through climate-resilient irrigation systems and efficient water resource management. Scaled up climate-resilient agriculture inputs, practices, markets and improved access to weather, climate and hydrological information for climate-resilient agriculture.”
