Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. MORE than 63 000 people in Bulilima and Kariba districts are benefiting from a humanitarian food assistance programme implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with Russia and the Government of Zimbabwe.
Speaking during a lean-season food distribution event in Bulilima District on Thursday, WFP head of external relations Ifeoma Garba highlighted the intervention’s importance in cushioning vulnerable households when food shortages are most severe.
Garba said Russia contributed pulses and vegetable oil worth US$1,5 million, complementing cereal supplies provided by the government.
The combined assistance ensures each beneficiary receives a monthly food basket comprising 7,5 kilogrammes of cereals, 1,7 kilogrammes of pulses and 652 millilitres of vegetable oil to support balanced nutrition.
“This assistance comes at a critical time when many families struggle to meet their daily food needs,” Garba said.
“It demonstrates the strength of partnerships in addressing food insecurity and supporting vulnerable communities.”
The programme targets households in Bulilima District and Kariba District, areas prone to food shortages, particularly during the lean season.
Garba noted that food insecurity remains a complex challenge affecting health, education, livelihoods and long-term community resilience.
She emphasised that collaboration between governments and international partners is key to tackling the crisis effectively.
The WFP also expressed gratitude to Russia for its continued support and commended the Government of Zimbabwe, local leadership and communities for their cooperation in the programme.
“As we look ahead, it is important for all stakeholders — including governments, the private sector, civil society and the international community — to continue working together towards a food-secure and resilient Zimbabwe,” Garba said.
The initiative underscores the impact of coordinated global and local efforts in improving livelihoods and ensuring dignity for vulnerable populations.
