Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. RABAT, Nov.27 (NewsDay Live) – Vice-President for Africa for the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) Carol Koech says her organisation is ready to grant support for Zimbabwe’s desire to increase power availability across the country.
She revealed this on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa Investment Forum in Morocco.
Zimbabwe is one of the Mission 300 countries, an initiative by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to connect 300 million people in Africa to reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity by 2030.
“Zimbabwe is one of the Mission 300 countries. They’ve recently signed a compact. And I think this is a great milestone that Zimbabwe has made because, as with many other African countries, we have about 600 million people in Africa without electricity,” Koech said.
In June this year, Zimbabwe presented it’s Energy Compact, or a plan of action and reforms, to the European private sector at the World Bank’s M300 (Africa Electrification) initiative in London, United Kingdom, clearly outlining energy investment opportunities in the country as part of a drive to lure investment
“And by Zimbabwe signing the compact, it means they have also made a commitment to connect a good number of people in Zimbabwe. What normally happens is, after a country has signed a compact, they will establish what we call a Compact Delivery and Monitoring Unit, which is a CDMU,” Koech said.
“And the role of the Global Energy Alliance is to support governments to ensure that there are resources to put into the CDMU, which is a coordinating body that makes sure that all the projects in the compact are actually getting implemented.
“This body also ensures that progress is being reported appropriately. So once Zimbabwe is already ready to establish the CDMU, we will be more than ready to support them to ensure that the compact is delivered and the people of Zimbabwe are connected to electricity.”
