Agricultural project for Magwegwe community

VULNERABLE groups in Magwegwe West suburb of Bulawayo have been given an opportunity to uplift their livelihoods after the setting up of a Mother and Child community agricultural project in the area.
The project is being carried out on a 1,5-hectare piece of land leased to the community for the next 5 years, has seen the elderly, child-headed families, people with disabilities and women getting a platform to fend for themselves.

It is expected that different crops will be produced in the area, with calls for more support in the form of implements, security and equipment for the project to reach its full potential.

While indicating that the project was influenced by the First Lady’s thrust of empowering the underprivileged in society, the brains behind the venture, Senator Molly Mpofu, revealed that it is also meant to bring the community together.

“As Senator, I noted that people discriminate among each other politically but when they are working here as a team, they learn to work as people of Zimbabwe. That is what motivated me,” said the senator.

Ward 8 Residents Chairman, Phillip Karanga hailed the move saying the project will go a long way in sustaining the vulnerable members of the Magwegwe community.

“This is a community issue and I am glad that vulnerable members of our community will be able to feed their families through this project,” said Karanga.

Plans are also underway to set up fish ponds at the site to ensure there is a variety in terms of projects being undertaken.
The unavailability of consistent water supply has however been described as a huge impediment, with pleas for well-wishers to assist.
