Six women from Mberengwa District in Midlands Province were stranded on an island in the Mwenezi River on Saturday after heavy rains upstream caused water levels to rise.
Mberengwa District Development Coordinator Vafios Hlabati confirmed the incident.
The women, from the Machingwe area, had gone to the river to fish to support their families when they were caught off guard by the sudden rise in water levels.
They were rescued by an Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopter on Sunday afternoon. Said Hlabati:
“Six women who were stranded overnight by floods at Mwenezi River have been rescued by an Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopter.
“The women, from the Machingwe area in Mberengwa, were marooned on Saturday night while fishing and were airlifted to safety this Sunday afternoon.”
