Algerian envoy calls for boost in bilateral trade

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Algeria’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mohammed Seoudi, has called for the establishment of a business council to boost bilateral relations between Algeria and Zimbabwe.

Seoudi made the call during the Intra-Africa Trade Fair launch for Zimbabwe’s participation at a campaign held in Bulawayo on Thursday last week.

He said the business council would help in creating job opportunities in the two countries.

“The creation of a business council improves trade between the two nations. We have more moden agricultural machinery within our nation and it would be great to trade with Zimbabwe as it will increase its production in the agricultural sector,” he said.

Seoudi said relations between Zimbabwe and Algeria were strong, with the latter offering science students scholarships to study in that country.

ZimTrade chief executive Allan Majuru said regional trade had become a powerful driver of economic growth in the region.

“Zimbabwe’s share of that intra-Africa trade is relatively low, but that also presents an opportunity as we will participate in this year’s edition in Algeria, the market presents business worth US$2,5 trillion combined,” he said.

Meanwhile, Afreximbank client relations manager for southern Africa Stanley Sachikonye said lack of infrastructure had affected intra-trade within Africa, hence slow development in the economy.

“Lack of infrastructure in Africa has affected intra-trade, hence we have been exporting a lot of our raw materials to Western nations, hindering the growth of our economies,” he said.

Sachikonye said the Afreximbank was ready to assist African countries with funding for intra-trade for the development of their economies.
