Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The 10th edition of the European Union Film Festival Zimbabwe (EU FILMFESTZW) begins next month in Harare and Bulawayo.

It runs from May 30 to June 8 under the theme, She Means Business, the co-curator of the event, Alex Gwaze, said.

The EU FILMFESTZW kicks off in Harare at the Mbare Art Space from May 30 to June 1. June 1 is dedicated to celebrating women through workshops, film screenings, music, art, announcements of winners for the Bioskop Short Film Competitions and the official launch of the 10th European Union Film Festival Zimbabwe.

The EU FILMFESTZW will have another commemoration at the Amakhosi Theatre from June 6 to 8 and it is believed that the choice of the venue is meant to accommodate a bigger audience and, in the process, resonate with the EU SILAMI TINEMI EU WITH YOU MOTTO.

The 10th edition of the EU FILMFESTZW shall, in addition to the traditional proceedings, include the announcements of the inaugural mobile — first short film competition themed — The Hustle Through Her Eyes. Filmmakers are supposed to submit their entries from April 11 to May 9. From there on, the adjudicators take over the business of deciding the best. Eighty entries were selected for the Bioskop Short Film competitions and it is believed that a much bigger number of entries is expected this year in response to the EU FILMFESTZW.

The EU FILMFESTZW, a mobile — First Short Film Competition —is an exploration of the creativity, strength and resilience women harness as they work to uplift themselves, their families and communities.

“This theme invites audiences to see the world through the eyes of women, highlighting their everyday acts of heroism that often go unnoticed. Eligible films shot on mobile phones should creatively spotlight the resourceful and powerful way women navigate challenges, create opportunities and shape their surroundings.

“The competition serves as a powerful reminder of the essential roles women play in building stronger and more resilient societies,” the synopsis read.

The 10th edition of the European Union Film Festival Zimbabwe celebrates women in film through showcasing the brilliance of successful women in film like Danai Gurira (actress, playwright and activist), Chipo Chung (actress and activist), Beauty Nakai Tsuro (multifaceted filmmaker, actor and script writer), Sue Ellen Chitunya (producer, filmmaker, a member of the Oscars Academy, Fellow of the Roger and Chaz Ebert, producer of films like Avengers (2019), For Tomorrow (2022) and Mr Right (2022) and Priscilla Sithole Ncube (filmmaker), among others.

The 9th edition of the EU FILMFESTZW took place in four locations — Harare, Kadoma, Gweru and Bulawayo. Mary Anibal, Tendai and the Laggards, hip hop artistes Nolontu and Asaph provided scintillating performances in Harare and Bulawayo, respectively.
