Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) is providing free eye surgery to people who are affected by cataracts in Mutoko, Mudzi and Mutawatawa, with at least 80 patients expected to benefit.

The Commander 2 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Mpulaeng Siziba told The Herald that the outreach is part of ZNA’s secondary role to aid communities. Said Brig Gen Siziba:

We are giving free cataract surgeries to people after we noticed that there is a great need of cataract operations in the country.

We found it important for us to go outside and bring the service to the people rather than them coming to Harare.

We have a target of 80 people in Mutoko, Mudzi and Mutawatawa. So far, we have operated 37 people in Mutoko and 18 people in Mudzi.

Brig Gen Siziba added that ZNA has plans to extend the free eye surgeries to Marondera District.

According to NHS, cataracts are when the lens, a small transparent disc inside your eye, develops cloudy patches.

Over time these patches usually become bigger causing blurry, misty vision and eventually blindness.
