Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) has called upon all sport-loving Zimbabweans to travel to Bindura today, for one of the biggest days on the national athletics calendar.

Bindura University of Science Education will host the twin event: the National Cross Country Championships followed by the highly anticipated NAAZ Athletics Excellence Awards.

The day promises a powerful blend of fierce competition, celebration and national pride, drawing athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters from across the country.

The day begins with the National Cross Country Championships, a thrilling showcase of determination where Zimbabwe’s finest endurance athletes will battle on the course.

This year’s edition carries even greater significance, as athletes fight to secure places on the national team for the 2026 World Cross Country Championships in Florida, the United States.

NAAZ president Tendai Tagara described the meet as “a defining moment for both emerging and elite runners — a test of stamina, pride and readiness for the global stage”.

NAAZ has emphasised that this is a day for all Zimbabweans.

“This is a celebration of national pride,” Tagara said.

“A celebration of athletes who carry our flag with honour.

“A celebration of the systems and partnerships that keep Zimbabwean athletics growing.”

Communities, schools, families, athletics clubs and corporate supporters are all strongly encouraged to travel to Bindura to rally behind the nation’s champions and future stars.

In the afternoon, the country will gather for the annual NAAZ Athletics Excellence Awards, an event recognising the outstanding achievements of the past season across all disciplines — sprints, distance running, field events, coaching and technical officiating.

This year’s awards will be graced by Patience Anna Fusire, a respected national leader from the Nyaradzo Group, who will deliver the keynote address.

Her presence highlights the strengthening corporate support that is vital for nurturing talent and elevating Zimbabwean athletics.
