Bindura Man Sentenced to 42 Years for Rape and Robbery

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A Bindura man, Chrispen Gundani (24), has been convicted on five counts of robbery and multiple rape charges following a violent overnight attack on a tuckshop attendant at Batanai Compound. The Bindura Magistrates’ Court handed down the verdict.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred on 22 August 2025 at around 1 AM.

The complainant, a 24-year-old tuckshop attendant, was asleep inside the shop where she routinely spent the night after work.

Gundani forced his way in by breaking the door, entered wearing a head-torch and armed with a kitchen knife, and ordered the woman to lie down.

He searched the premises while demanding money and, upon learning that only US$4 was available, became increasingly violent.

Over the next four hours, Gundani repeatedly raped the complainant inside the tuckshop.

He also dragged her at knifepoint between the shop and her employer’s house in search of more money.

During the ordeal, he stole her Redmi Note 9 Pro smartphone, consumed beer from the tuckshop refrigerator, and threatened to kill her if she attempted to call for help. The total value of the stolen items was US$244.

The traumatised complainant managed to seek help only at dawn when a customer knocked on the door.

Later that month, police arrested Gundani during a public violence incident at Kitsiyatota.

His possession of the stolen phone, which the complainant successfully unlocked with her password, immediately linked him to the rape and robbery.

Gundani was sentenced to 72 years’ imprisonment, with an effective custodial term of 42 years, after the court applied concurrent sentences.

The NPA said the case underscores its commitment to ensuring that sexual predators and violent offenders are held fully accountable and pursued without hesitation. It said:

“Women and girls must feel safe in their workplaces and homes. The justice system will not hesitate to impose severe penalties on those who violate vulnerable victims.”
