Buhera Woman Jailed for Selling Girl Into Prostitution

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A 30-year-old woman from Buhera has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Mutare Regional Court after being found guilty of trafficking a 14-year-old girl for the purposes of prostitution.

Pelagia Zindiye lured the teenager to Mutare under false pretences on 29 June 2025, claiming they were going to collect property.

The following day, the girl left her home without her family’s knowledge and travelled with Zindiye to the city.

Upon arrival, they met Steward Gororo, a truck driver who is currently on the run. Zindiye handed the minor over to Gororo and accepted a payment of US$40 for sexual services.

Gororo then took the girl to a restaurant, led her into a private room, locked the door, and raped her.

After the assault, the victim confided in Zindiye, who instructed her to remain silent. A tip-off to the police led to Zindiye’s arrest and subsequent conviction.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has condemned the crime, calling for greater vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals, especially children. The NPA said:

“Sexual violence and human trafficking are serious offences. We must stand together to protect the vulnerable and ensure justice is served.”
