Cabinet Ministers speak on challenges faced by youths

Cabinet ministers this Friday responded to various challenges being faced by young people in the country, ranging from limited access to health services to laws that are not aligned to the constitution.

The junior cabinet sitting of the 27th session of the Junior Parliament of Zimbabwe was organised by the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Youth Council and UNICEF.

The platform provided cabinet ministers with an opportunity to get an insight into some of the challenges affecting the young people.

Vice President, Retired General Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who is also in charge of the Health and Child Care portfolio, outlined measures that the ministry is putting in place to address sexual and reproductive health concerns of young people as well as the age of consent as it relates to issues of accessing healthcare.

Other ministers present who included Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi (Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs), Professor Paul Mavima (Primary and Secondary Education) and Professor Amon Murwira (Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development) responded to issues to do with the alignment of laws, the extension of civil servants US dollar allowances to December as well as children’s welfare.

Minister Kirsty Coventry and her Deputy, Honourable Tino Machakaire thanked the president for his commitment to uplifting the lives of young people.

Unicef country representative, Ms Moylee Moshiri commended the Zimbabwean government for allowing the young people to play a central role in advocating for the enjoyment of their rights.
