Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A dedicated anime film festival celebrating iconic Studio Ghibli films is set to come to South Africa in August.
The Anime Film Festival, presented by Gravel Road Distribution Group, will kick off on 8 August with the classic animation movie My Neighbour Totoro (1988). The festival will take place in cinemas across the country.
Academy award-winning film Spirited Away will also screen from 23 August and Howl’s Moving Castle will be shown from 6 September.
The Anime Film Festival cinemas include Ster-Kinekor Eastgate, Mall of Africa, The Zone@ Rosebank, Cavendish Square, Somerset Mall, Tyger Valley, V&A Waterfront, Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Bayside Mall, The Bioscope, The Labia and others.
The festival will also feature anime themed activations such as tea tastings, fan art displays, cosplay events and more, linked to each film.
Tickets for the festival will be available at Ster-Kinekor cinemas at R75 per ticket per film (no club discounts applicable). Bookings will open soon.
The festival comes after the global success of Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning film The Boy and the Heron.
Studio Ghibli has delivered numerous highly acclaimed films since its inception in 1985.
Founded by film directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, the studio has won two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe and the coveted Cannes Film Festival honourary Palme d’Or.
