Chamisa Advised To Drop MDC Alliance Name

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. University of Kent law lecturer, Alex Magaisa, has advised the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa to abandon the MDC brand and adopt a new name for the party ahead of the 26 May by-elections and next year’s general elections.

This comes after the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T wrote a letter to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) saying no other party is allowed to use the name MDC or its derivatives in any election as it is their identity.

It also comes as the Chamisa-led party reportedly resolved to register its candidates under the MDC Alliance name saying they will not give up the name without a fight.

Posting on microblogging site Twitter early on Wednesday, Magaisa said there are some battles that are not worth fighting. He wrote:

We learn the following from Sun Tzu, the great war strategist of ancient China, “He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight”.

A wise general chooses his battles carefully. Some battles aren’t worth the effort and are best avoided. The best are won without fighting.

MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said the party is prepared for the upcoming elections and will teach “ZANU PF” a lesson. She tweeted:

We guarantee that we’ll bring our A-game to this & every election. There’ll be no confusion. People know who their leaders are.

We’re going to teach Zanu PF, by whatever name called, a lesson in this election & in the main show. There must be action on reforms.
