Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Chinhoyi Municipality has issued a final notice directing all dog owners in the Mashonaland West provincial capital to properly secure their dogs, warning that animals found roaming freely will be impounded.
In a notice, the local authority reminded residents that, under municipal dog by-laws, all dogs must be kept on a leash when outside their homes and in public spaces.
The directive, issued through the Department of Health Services, is intended to protect residents from preventable harm.
Municipal officials said allowing dogs to roam freely poses serious risks, including dog bites, the spread of rabies and other diseases, and traffic accidents involving motorists attempting to avoid stray animals.
Health experts also warn that roaming dogs may become aggressive, scavenge at refuse dumps, and contribute to unsanitary conditions in residential areas, thereby increasing public health risks.
The enforcement of the tie-up order forms part of broader efforts to ensure a safe, clean, and orderly urban environment for all residents.
