Chitungwiza Mayor Warns Residents Over Illegal Dumps

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Chitungwiza Mayor, Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, has raised serious concerns over an illegal dumpsite found next to homes in Unit D during the National Clean-Up Campaign at Chinomona Shops on Friday, 5 December.

Mangoma reminded residents that refuse is collected in Unit D every Monday and urged households to put their bins out on time.

She also warned that the Municipality will issue block fines to anyone who allows waste to pile up near their homes. Said Mangoma:

“The dumpsite I saw adjacent to residential houses made me angry. Imagine the Guest of Honour had to see it. We must be responsible and shun the bad habit of creating dumps.

“If you let people dump garbage near your houses, you will pay block fines.”

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Provincial Manager Leon Mutungamiri, the Guest of Honour, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, Senator Charles Tawengwa, emphasised the importance of keeping surroundings clean, particularly during the rainy season.

The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including Children of the Soil, Econet, the Community Dancers Association, Seke One High, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, Junior Councillors, King and Queens Dance Group, Environmental Health Services, EMA, municipal staff, Epworth Local Board, Chitungwiza Residents Trust (Chitrest), Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trusts (ZNOART), Delta Corporation, the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, and Chad’s Corner of Compassion.
